From Julio Hernandez Lopez in La Jornada, May 21, 2026:
Evo Morales, former President of Bolivia, stated yesterday - amidst the intense social mobilization against the government of right-winger Rodrigo Paz, the repression of protests, and overt United States interference - the following: "The DEA is operating here. There is overt interference by the United States government. . . Israel, the United States, and right wing governments like (Javier) Milei's are engaging in overt interference to support and consolidate privatizations in Bolivia . . . .To me Operation Condor remains in effect.*
Previously, it was executed by colonels and generals of the armed forces of Latin America; now, however, it is executed by prosecutors and judges (from the United States). They use the fight against drug trafficking - which is a false pretext for the geopolitical control of Latin America." He also proposed: "If I were Rodrigo Paz, I would publicly summon the COB (Bolivian Workers' Central), all social sectors, and the political parties - including Evo Pueblo (and I would say): 'I pledge not to privatize basic services; I will not hand over lithium or rare earth elements to transnational corporations; I will not privatize healthcare or education; and I will not amend the Constitutions without the people, without a referendum.' And the tension would subside.
In Bolivia, much as in Cuba, with the demand for the extradition of Raul Castro; as has occurred in other Latin American nations; and as is now being attempted in Mexico - Washington seeks to brandish a sword of justice. It does do by unilaterally weaponizing the issue of drug trafficking, relying on a legal framework tailored to the interest of the dominant power, in order to entrap, undermine, and - if possible - control or replace progressive governments."
*"In 1976 six National Security States of Latin America - Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay - entered into a system for the joint monitoring and assassinating of dissident refugees in member countries. The program was directly initiated under the sponsorship of Chile and its head of the secret police (DINA), Manuel Contreras. Chile provided the initial funding, organized a series of meetings in Santiago, and provided the computer capacity and centralized services. However, the United States deserves a great deal of credit for this important development, partly as the sponsor and advisor to DINA and other participating security services, but also because Operation Condor represented a culmination of a long sought U.S. objective - coordination of the struggle against 'Communism' and 'subversion.'" --- Edward S.
